Postage Stamp Farm (Annabelle Gundlach, Tommy Collingwood, Brandon Phillips and Jeff Blake) raced out to a 6-3 halftime lead over SD Farms (Sayyu Dantata, Peco Polledo, Andres Weisz and Alan Martinez) Friday afternoon in cross-bracket semifinal play of the Santa Rita Abierto 16-goal to earn a berth in Sunday’s 10am final.
Andres Weisz cored the first goal of the game for the early SD Farms lead, 1-0. Brandon Phillips countered with a 30-yard penalty conversion and a goal from the field as Postage Stamp Farm closed out the opening chukker with a 2-1 advantage.
Jeff Blake’s first goal of the game had Postage Stamp Farm in front by two goals, 3-1 as the second period got underway. SD Farms fought back with goals from the field from Alan Martinez and Sayyu Dantata, tying the game at three goals apiece, 3-3.
Postage Stamp Farm took control of the game in the third chukker. Goals from Tommy Collingwood, Annabelle Gundlach and Blake went unanswered. At the end of the first half of play, Postage Stamp Farm held a three goal lead, 6-3.
Phillips extended the Postage Stamp Farm lead to four goals with a 60-yard penalty conversion in the fourth chukker, 7-3. Peco Polledo responded with a goal from the field for SD Farms. The three goal Postage Stamp Farm lead remained after four chukkers, 7-4.
Postage Stamp Farm continued to dominate in the fifth period. Goals from Collingwood and Phillips were countered by a pair of goals from Dantata. SD Farms trailed 9-6 with one chukker remaining in regulation play.
SD Farms team captain Dantata scored the final goal of the game in a low-scoring sixth period. Postage Stamp Farm was content to ride out the chukker for the 9-7 victory.
Phillips scored four times for Postage Stamp Farm (two on penalty conversions). Collingwood and Blake added two goals apiece and Gundlach scored once for the win.
Dutta Corp. 12, Casablanca 10
In the second semifinal of the day, Dutta Corp. (Timmy Dutta, Carlitos Gracida, Matias Magrini and Mariano Gracida) edged Casablanca (Grant Ganzi, Juancito Bollini, Malcolm Borwick and Stewart Armstrong), 12-10, earning themselves a slot in Sunday’s 10am Santa Rita Abierto 16-goal final.
The 13-goal Casablanca team received three goals by handicap to open the game but it was Matias Magrini who scored the first goal for Dutta Corp. on a 30-yard penalty conversion, 3-1. English 6-goaler Malcolm Borwick responded in kind, converting a 30-yard penalty shot of his own to keep Casablanca in front, 4-1.
Carlitos Gracida scored twice for Dutta Corp. in second chukker action, converting a 30-yard penalty shot and adding a goal from the field. Casablanca was held scoreless in second period play but maintained the lead, 4-3.
Borwick scored p a pair of 40-yard penalty shots in third period play, but the Dutta Corp. attack rode three goals from Carlitos Gracida to a 6-6 tie at the end of the first half. Carlitos Gracida converted penalty shots from the 30 and 40-yard lines and added a goal from the field.
Dutta corp. added two more goals in the fourth chukker with Carlitos converting another 30-yard penalty shot and Mariano Gracida scoring a goal from the field. Borwick added another 40-yard penalty goal to the Casablanca column but it was Dutta Corp. who left the field with the 8-7 lead.
The two teams matched one another goal for goal in the fifth period. Juancito Bollini scored twice for Casablanca while Dutta Corp. picked up goals from Carlitos Gracida and Magrini. Dutta Corp. continued to hold a narrow one goal lead over Casablanca, 10-9, with one chukker left to play.
Carlitos Gracida scored his eighth and ninth goals of the game in the sixth chukker, scoring once on a 30-yard penalty shot and adding a goal from the field. Bollini accounted for Casablanca’s only goa of the final chukker in the 12-1- Dutta Corp. win.
Carlitos Gracida took top-scoring honors with nine goals (five on penalty conversions). Magrini scored twice and Mariano Gracida added a goal for the victory. Borwick scored all four of his team-leading four goals on penalty conversions. Bollini added three goals and the team received three goals on handicap.
The win sends Dutta Corp. into Sunday’s 10am Santa Rita Abierto 16-goal final against Postage Stamp Farm at the Grand Champions Polo Club.
